Extraction and Immediate Implant Candidacy: Who May Qualify
Published September 2026 · Call (916) 886-1806
Overview
Some people ask whether a dental implant can be placed at the same visit as a tooth extraction. Immediate placement into a fresh socket is one approach that may be discussed when anatomy, infection status, bone, gums, bite, and overall health support it. This education page explains candidacy questions and why staging can be safer for some cases. It does not promise same-day extraction and implant placement for every patient.
What “immediate” can mean
Immediate implant placement generally means placing an implant soon after a tooth is removed, sometimes during the same appointment when conditions allow. That timing is not automatic. The clinical team evaluates the socket walls, remaining bone, soft tissue, neighboring teeth, the planned restoration, and whether infection or other factors suggest waiting. A temporary restoration may or may not be part of a given plan; nothing here promises a temporary tooth for every case.
Staging—extracting first, allowing healing, then placing an implant later—can be recommended when the site needs more time, grafting discussion, infection control, or further evaluation. Neither pathway is universally “better.” The safer path is the one matched to the individual examination and records.
Who may qualify—and who may need staging
Candidacy depends on findings the clinician reviews with you, not on an online search. Factors that often enter the conversation include bone volume and quality at the site, gum health, bite forces, medical history, medications, smoking or tobacco use, and the condition of the tooth being removed. Active infection, insufficient socket support, or other site-specific concerns can lead the team to recommend a staged approach instead of same-day placement.
Ask what imaging or records are needed before a recommendation. Ask whether grafting, soft-tissue considerations, or temporary options would be discussed if immediate placement is or is not advised. Do not treat an online claim of “same-day for everyone” as a clinical plan.
After the consultation: next steps without pressure
If the recommendation is immediate placement, ask for written preparation and post-procedure instructions before the day of treatment. If staging is recommended, ask what healing milestones the team wants to see before implant placement is reconsidered. Either way, confirm how to reach the office with questions and what changes—swelling beyond guidance, fever, uncontrolled bleeding, or severe pain—should prompt a same-day call. No fee, travel time, or guaranteed same-day outcome is stated here.
Consultation checklist
Bring your medication and supplement list, allergies, medical history, prior dental records or imaging if available, and a clear list of goals for the tooth being considered. Ask:
1. Is immediate placement realistic for this specific socket, or is staging safer?
2. What do my examination and imaging show about bone, gums, and infection risk?
3. If immediate placement is not recommended, what healing steps and follow-up come next?
4. What temporary options, if any, apply while the site heals or the implant integrates?
5. What symptoms after extraction or placement should prompt a routine call, same-day call, or urgent evaluation?
6. Can I take home a written outline of the recommended sequence and contact instructions?
