Implant dentistry in the United States is not yet a recognized ADA dental specialty — meaning any licensed general dentist can legally place implants regardless of formal training in surgical implantology beyond dental school. The credentials that distinguish surgeons with documented advanced training are administered by two principal organizations. The American Dental Implant Association (ADIA) confers Diplomate and Mastership credentials based on documented case volume, written examination, and peer-reviewed case presentation; Diplomate-level credentialing is held by fewer than 1% of U.S. dentists.
