High Bite After Implant Crown

Published September 2026 · Call (916) 886-1806

Overview

A newly seated implant crown can feel taller, sharper, or early when you close. That “high bite” sensation is an occlusion question, not the same problem as a crown that rocks, spins, or comes off. 1999 Implant wrote this page as post-seat occlusion education.

High contact is not the same as a loose crown

If the crown feels solid but lands before the rest of your teeth meet, you are describing first-contact timing. If the crown wobbles, clicks in a new way, or lifts when you chew, that is a different pathway—call about mobility or retention instead of assuming a polish will fix it. Natural teeth flex slightly under load; implant-supported crowns do not cushion the same way. A contact that hits first can overload one spot, tip chewing to the other side, or leave jaw muscles fatigued by evening. Mild awareness for a short stretch can happen as you adapt. A bite that still feels wrong, makes you avoid that side, or turns tender around a previously comfortable implant is a reason to return for a clinical check.

Why chairside adjustment beats DIY grinding

Do not file, emery-board, or “knock down” an implant crown at home. Household abrasives can ruin glaze, open rough surfaces that stain or collect plaque, and remove material in places the clinician would have left alone. Chairside adjustment uses marking ribbon and controlled reduction—not kitchen tools.

Call (916) 886-1806 if the high feel started the same day as delivery, overnight, or after a particular meal.

Practical steps many teams discuss (confirm what your clinician prefers):

• Soften hard crunch and sticky foods on the new-crown side until occlusion is rechecked.

• Avoid ice chewing, bottle-cap tricks, or using the crown as a tool.

• Note whether the high feel is constant, only on closing, or only on a specific chewing stroke.

• Call sooner for swelling, fever, drainage, sudden mobility, or pain that wakes you at night.

Use plain clinical language so the front desk can triage:

1. “My implant crown feels high / tall / early when I close.”

1. “It started [same day / next morning / after a meal].”

1. “The crown does / does not feel loose.”

1. “I am favoring the other side / noticing jaw fatigue / noticing gum tenderness near the implant.”

1. “Was the crown cemented or screw-retained, and does that change today’s adjust plan?”
